Woman-Owned Business Enterprise logo

What is WBE Certification? WBE Certification stands for Woman Business Enterprise and denotes that a woman (or women) has majority ownership and control of a business entity. The NWBOC WBE Certification Program is not an endorsement of applicant's goods, services, pricing, or profitability. Why is WBE Certification Important? Obtaining WBE Certification is an important business development strategy for women business owners for two primary reasons: First, most local and national government purchasing agencies track and/or have programs for doing business with women business owners. Having WBE Certification is the only way the purchasing agents have confidence that a business representing itself as woman-owned is, in fact, woman-owned and controlled. Second, many publicly-held corporations, as well as larger private corporations, also track and have programs for doing business with women-owned vendor companies. They, too, rely on WBE Certification. Currently, the 5% federal goal was established in 2000 with the Women's Equity in Contracting Act that gave the contracting office the ability to restrict competition for women-owned firms that have WBE Certification -- up to 5% of all contracts. The intent of this program is to encourage procurement officers to utilize women-owned firms at a higher level in both the number of firms awarded contracts and the dollar amounts awarded to them.

Northeastern Subcontractors Association logo

Northeastern Subcontractors Association, Inc. (NESCA) is a non-profit trade association representing over 500 Northeastern New York subcontractors, specialty contractors and material and equipment suppliers. Founded in 1971, NESCA is a full-service organization committed to serving the needs of commercial, industrial and institutional subcontractors, specialty contractors and material suppliers located in the Capital District, Hudson Valley, north country and Binghamton areas. NESCA concentrates exclusively on the business issues affecting its members. From subcontract language to payment concerns; from lien law reform to reducing retainage; NESCA fights to protect the interests of subcontractors and suppliers doing business in New York State. NESCA was established for four basic purposes; to provide its members with information, education, advocacy and networking opportunities within the construction industry. Information is provided to members through monthly newsletters, special emails and bulletins, and at monthly membership meetings. NESCA educates its members with an extensive array of management seminars, supervisory training programs, OSHA training and other seminars and courses provided through an educational partnership with the Associated General Contractors of NYS and Eastern Contractors Association. Advocacy is provided by NESCA through comprehensive representation of our members' interests before the NYS Legislature, public contracting agencies and the business community. NESCA members also have plenty of networking opportunities by way of monthly membership meetings as well as annual events such as our Trade Show and our Meet the Estimators networking event. Since its inception, NESCA has grown into the largest regional subcontractors association in the nation. The association's growing membership includes both union and open-shop companies.
